Wave Power Project
Phase I of the park will be 2MW and is projected to save Tonga $2 million in foreign exchange; displace two million liters of fuel; reduce carbon emissions by roughly 5.6 kilotons and generate enough power for 2,800 homes.
- Date: Mar 17, 2023
- Member Country: Kingdom of Tonga
- Partner: Seabased
- Project Type: Wave Power Park
Project Description
Phase I will develop and deploy the first pilot commercial-scale two-megawatt (2 MW) Wave Power Park in the Pacific. The Tongatapu Wave Power Park can potentially be ready for commissioning within 24 months, with a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), and at no cost to the Government.
The proposed site could hold up to 50MW and is the closest possible to the shore of the alternatives we were able to find on the available sea charts (Navionics).
As other SIDS, Tonga is highly dependent on imported fossil fuels, and spends millions of dollars in foreign exchange annually to import these. This is unfortunate both for the environment, and for Tonga’s energy security and its ability to offer affordable power to its people.
Tonga’s target is to achieve 70% renewables by 2025. It will need to replace aging and inefficient fuel-powered generators over the coming years, and is determined to do so in a manner that is climate resilient and aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals to the greatest extent possible.
It is further determined to do so in a manner that increases its energy security while ensuring affordable electricity for all.
